This is a private server established in 1996 from the passion of a small group of pioneers lead by Leachim and is one of the first live chat services on the net, already recognized worldwide. Access to Channels (Applet Java), registrations of nicknames or channels are all through web interface. This does not mean a decrease in functions but on the contrary a more efficient, simplified method of utilization and major security not only for the users but for the server itself. This Guide is created to answer all questions. If there is something missing please write to info@chatzone.de and we will update the contents accordingly. You can consult this guide at any time by clicking on the Help button in the main chat window. IMPORTANT

GENERAL INFORMATION
What is
IRC
IRC (Internet
Relay Chat) are conversations retransmitted in internet, it's a system written
originally in Finland by Jarkko Oikarinen in 1988 and is now used worldwide.
IRC is a multi-user chat system that allows encounters in virtual spaces called
"channels" or "rooms" in order to converse privately or
in groups.
How
does IRC work
The concept is supplier of a service (server)
and consumer of the same (client). In our case the server is the computer (and
program) that permit various clients to connect and thus utilize the IRC service.
Through a client installed in the computer itself it is possible to connect
to an IRC server and be able to chat. There are many types of clients, in our
case it is a small Java application (applet) that is downloaded in a few seconds
and will connect you directly to a "channel" or "room",
posted by the owner of the website you are in.
Our
IRC server
An IRC server can be compared to a large
hotel, with unlimited number of rooms (channels) that can be opened simply join
them. When "join chat" you enter in a specific room or channel, but
are still able to see what other rooms are active at that moment and be able
to eventually change. There can also be private channels which would not be
visible, as per the request of the channel owner or per our server rules. A
channel can have a permanent owner (registered channel) who decides how the
cannel will be utilized.
Our IRC Server
hosts channels throughout the world in many different languages. For this reason
the channels have been regrouped according to the language utilized, the applet
is available in many different languages. The server automatically assigns a
prefix to a channel based on the language posted in the applet, the commands
and the information are translated in your language and you will be able to
view only the channels with the prefix in your language. English channels have
the prefix #en. However there is a command used in order to
view all channels in all languages. Consult the command guide.
Who
are IRC Admins
An
operator of the server (IRC Administrator) is one who manages the server and
has access to all the channels, he can be recognized by the red square before
his name and also by writing /whois (his nickname) you will see the following
message: is an IRC administrator. In most cases they are not
available to resolve problems existing in channel. The operators of the server
have more important things to do then interfere in the personal disputes of
a channel. They will however intervene when a user in a channel refuses to leave
and disturbs others in the process or when the general rules of the server are
not respected.
General
server rules
There are basic rules on our server and the IRC Admins will make sure they are
respected
IMPORTANT
This is not a public service. We reserve the right to refuse use of this service
to a user or domain without notification or motive. This service is free of
charge and thus not permitting abuse of any kind. ChatZone and the staff administering
the server do not have any type of prevention control on the contents and thus
cannot be held in anyway responsible for the content of the messages sent by
the users via this server.
Accessing
the server
It is not allowed to access the server with clients or scripts, for example
mIRC. The server is protected and will allow access only to the administrators.
This guarantees stability and security to the entire system.
Netiquette
IRC chat is a very popular way to communicate and meet new people. There are
a set of basic rules of communication that are valid throughout the world called
Netiquette also known as “good manners on the net” When interacting in chat
one must remember he is in virtual atmosphere populated by many different types
of persons and that our messages will be read by unknown people of various ages,
culture and religion, and therefore that we write can be easy misinterpreted.
The most common rules of good conduct are:
- Saying hello when entering and goodbye when exiting a channel just as you
would in reality when finding yourself in a place where many people get together
to talk freely.
- Avoid using upper case (caps), because when doing so it is considered the
equivalent to yelling or raising your voice to be heard over others. If you
wish to highlight a word or phrase it can be done by using asterisks or by underling
it (*highlight* _highlight_)
- Avoid repeating yourself, writing the same message more than once can only
compromise the discussion where others may be unable to read the messages of
the conversation. This is simply called flooding and the moderators of the room
may punish such behaviour.
- Avoid abusing the use of colours, writing messages with too many colours can
be bothersome to other people in the channel who might visualize the message
differently.
- Try not to be offensive, writing messages with strong subject matter or using
colourful language can create problems in the channel. We cannot be sure that
the persons that are present and reading the messages are not underage or persons
with ideas different from our own. In any case it is prohibited to freely and
knowingly insult other people.
- Avoid advertising; writing messages to promote personal gain is not appreciated.
This is considered Spamming and is not acceptable on our channel.
- Avoid divulging personal information, (name, surname, telephone, e-mail)
Spamming
Spamming is advertising your own channel or site on other channels. Spamming
is also entering in a channel and promoting other sites. This is not allowed
on our server. Once notified by the channel operator or by users, IRC Admins
will act quickly and in particular cases may also permanently ban from all channels
of the server (kline)
Flooding
Flooding (overflowing) means continuous repetition of the same message in public,
and also in private. This type of behavior is very irritating and not allowed.
The server will silence the person for 60 seconds for repeating the same message
more than 3 times. In the case of a user who persists with flooding in public
or in private, IRC Admins may act by disconnecting him from the server or banning
him from the channel.
Channel
registration
T o register a channel you must have your own site where you will put the channel.
The information that you supply during the procedure of registration must be
true and complete. Daily monitoring will be done on the information supplied
and the site which has registered a channel, if this rule is not respected the
registration will be cancelled. Every site may register only one channel, multiple
registrations are not allowed and all the registrations will be cancelled as
a result. The registrations have un3utilization expiry date of 60 days after
which the registration will automatically be cancelled and the name of the cannel
will become available for a new registration.
IMPORTANT: We do not accept registrations of channels that deal with illegal subject matter of any kind. We do not want channels of this type on our server.
Registering
Adult or private channels
During the registration phase you will find a voice or at least: Adult Channel.
By selecting Yes in the space adult channel will ensure that it will not appear
in the active channel listing.
- Adult channels
Adult channel consist of channels that deal with subject matter not suitable
for minors or is intended for adults. These channels must not appear in the
public active channel listing and are obligated to be registered as such. Not
specifying this during the registration phase will result in the cancellation
of the registration and the impossibility of future use. The channel will be
automatically set up for adults but you will not be able to become operator.
- Private channels
A private channel will not be visible in the active channel listing. If you
wish give access to this channel only from your website and not through the
public active channel listing, during the registration phase select Yes in the
section Adult channel to ensure that only the users of your site will recognize
the name of the channel and can access it.
Temporary
channels
Temporary channels cannot contain subject matter unsuitable for minors, temporary
channels with adult or illegal content cannot be opened, and these channels
will be closed immediately.
Nick registration
When registering your nickname please make sure the information listed is true
and complete, in a case where the information is false the nickname will be
cancelled. You can register only one nickname. Any other nicks will be cancelled.
The registration has an unutilization expiry date of 60 days, after which both
information and nickname will be automatically cancelled and will be once again
available for registration.
Online
Help
Online
help is available at any time with the administrators of a server. If you require
the assistance or need to contact an administrator go to channel #leahcim (by
typing in chat /join #leahcim)
What
is a Nickname
On IRC you are recognized by others through
your Nickname (pseudonym). You are free to choose any nick you wish, up to but
not more than 20 characters. Spaces or unusual characters are not allowed. If
the nickname you are using is already in use by others or has been already registered
it will automatically be modified by the server who will add on numbers at the
end of the nickname to avoid confusion. You can register your nickname, which
means that exact name will not be able to be used by others without having the
numbers added on by the server. All registered nicknames are recognizable by
a preceding yellow icon square.
Privacy
Our server does not permit other users to identify your IP address, thus guaranteeing
you privacy and security. Upon entering the chat or using the command
/whois nick you be able to see a code of this type: (~Applet@2E85524C1D949.chatzone.de)
this series of numbers and letters are a code not decryptable and replaces your
IP address and renders it impossible for anyone to see your connection info.
Only IRC Admins (recognized by the red square in front of their nick) can visualize
you connection info and forward them exclusively to the Police in accordance
to legal bylaws.
What
is a channel
A channel is a room in IRC where a group
discussion can take place, here people can enter this channel and see the other
participants. Depending on the topic of the hour, the channel can be very crowded,
chaotic or very calm. The channels can be available to anyone but can also be
closed and private accessible only to certain users. The channels in IRC are
dynamic in the sense that anyone can create a new channel and enter a channel
not yet in existence (/join #en.channelname) the channel will disappear automatically
when the last person exits. Once connected type /list in order to see the existing
channels. All english channel names begin with #en.
Registered
Channel
A channel is registered when its name has been recorded by someone who has become
owner. In order to register a channel you must have a web site where the channel
can be inserted. The owner of the channel will be operator and will decide the
rules of use and complete control.
Temporary channel
Anyone can create a temporary channel by typing /join #en.anyname but will not
have access to operator functions (which require the registration of the channel)
Commands
By command
we mean typing an order to the server to execute a specific action. The symbol
which identifies a command is the forward slash / followed
by the name of the command to be executed and the characteristics of that command.
The first symbol is always the forward slash /. If this symbol
is not present the server will not recognize it as a command and everything
will be sent in chat as a usual message, pay close attention when sending a
command.
Please note: Frequently used commands are available also in the popup menu.

Who
are channel operators
A
channel operator has an @ in front of his nick. The channel operators are those
who make sure that the rules and regulations of that channel are respected.
This means that they are at liberty to distance you from their channel for various
reasons if necessary. If you do not agree you have the option of creating your
own channel and becoming operator yourself. Remember that when you enter a channel
it’s as if you are entering someone’s home, you are a guest and you must respect
the rules of the owner.
Private
messages
Private messages cannot be seen by anyone
and only you must decide whether you wish to receive them or not and whom to
receive from.
There are commands that allow you to control your private messages:
Inviting
a user for a private chat
By double clicking on a nickname a private window will open up where you can
converse privately with that user.
Ignoring
If for any reason you do not wish to view the private and public messages of
a user, highlight his nick then right click and select ignore,
from that moment on you will no longer be able to view his messages. You can
attain the same results by typing in chat /ignore hisnick.
To cancel this action you need only repeat the same steps and the command will
be removed.
Disabling
private window popup
If you do not wish to have private windows popping up when others call on you,
in chat type /queries this way you will see any private messages
in the main window of the chat in the form of a private message for you that
can be seen only by you. To cancel this action you need only repeat your steps
and the command will be removed. This does not in any way prevent you from inviting
others into a private conversation. It basically allows you to decide whom to
answer by opening the private window if you wish to do so.
Protection
against private messages from other channels
It is possible to receive and send private messages to a user in another channel
of the server. The command is /msg nick <message> (found
in commands list). To avoid being disturbed in private by users from other channels
an already active protection is present that does not permit users from other
channels to contact you in private. You can disable this protection by typing
in chat /extmsg and enabling it by repeating the same step.
Coloring
your messages
to
colour your text click on the colours that are shown at the bottom left of the
chat screen.
- Right click = background colour
- Left click = text colour
How to colour your messages in public (and private) chat without using the normal commands of the channel:
Colors
code:
0 = White
1 = Black
2 = Dark Blue
3 = Green
4 = Red
5 = Brown
6 = Purple
7 = Orange
8 = Yellow
9 = Light Green
10 = Teal
11 = Light Blue
12 = Electric Blue
13 = Violet
14 = Dark Grey
15 = Light Grey
Example:
|2,8 test (this command visualizes the word “test” in blue with yellow background
)
The pipe '|' (first symbol that composes the string of commands) can be obtained
by pressing shift backslash \ ('\' found at the top left section of the keyboard
- beneath the esc button).
The first number before the pipe (the number 2 in the example) determines the
colour of the text. The second number (the one after the comma – the number
8 in the example) determines the colour of the background.
Changing the numbers after typing the pipe '|' will also change the color of
the text that follows the command.
Other examples (you can try these examples in a private chat window substituting
the “your message” with your own message):
|8,2 your message
|7,1 your message
|0,1 your message
How to obtain specific graphic effects using this method of colouring
your messages
it is possible to obtain many various graphic effects (limited only to your
imagination).
Example:
|2,8\|8,2/|2,8\|8,2/|2,8\|8,2/|2,8\|8,2/|2,8\|8,2/|2,8\|8,2/ (this command visualizes
a zigzag effect with the colours blue and yellow).
In the previous example in order to achieve the results desired the numbers
in the code were inverted and written repeatedly with every new command to add
colour to the characters and to the background of the message(2,8 e 8,2).
To achieve the zigzag effect back slashes '\' and forward slashes '/' were added
alternating the symbols accordingly to achieve the end result.
Example (substitute “your message” with your own message):
|11,12\|12,11\|11,12\|12,11\|11,12\|12,11\|2,12 your own message |12,11/|11,12/|12,11/|11,12/|12,11/|11,12/
Pattern
the pattern command is needed to automatically
add (without having to copy or type it every time) a design, at he beginning
or the end (or in both positions) of your message.
Please note: the pattern command affects only messages in public chat.
Example:
/pattern %s |12,11\|11,12\|12,11\|11,12\|12,11\|2,12 pattern example |12,11/|11,12/|12,11/|11,12/|12,11/
In the previous example the string of colours
|11,12\|12,11\|11,12\|12,11\|11,12\|12,11\|2,12 pattern example |12,11/|11,12/|12,11/|11,12/|12,11/|11,12/
is added to the end of every message forwarded in public chat.
The symbol %s indicates the position of where the message will appear each time
it’s written depending on the type of pattern you have applied. It is possible
to insert a pattern also at the beginning of a normal chat message:
Example:
/pattern |11,12\|12,11\|11,12\|12,11\|11,12\|12,11\|2,12 pattern example |12,11/|11,12/|12,11/|11,12/|12,11/|11,12/
%s
Example:
/pattern |11,12\|12,11\|11,12\|12,11\|11,12\|12,11\ %s |12,11/|11,12/|12,11/|11,12/|12,11/|11,12/
In the first example the symbol %s has been placed at the end of the string
of commands, so that the design will be seen before the normal chat message.
In the second example the symbol %s has been placed in the middle of the string
of commands, so that the normal chat message will be seen in between both designs.
IMPORTANT: Once the pattern has been setup, it will remain set until the end
of that chat session. The only way to remove the pattern is to type the command
/pattern %s
Help
I have been banned
You
must speak to the operators of the channel and only to them. The operators of
the channel do not need to have “reasons” to ban you, they decide what happens
in the channel. Complaining to the Operators of the server for having been distanced
or expelled from a channel is considered extremely childish and will not change
the outcome. The Operators of the server will not interfere in the rules of
the channel, this is the sole responsibility of the operator of the channel
itself. If you have been distanced or expelled from a channel you are free to
create your own and decide your own rules and regulations. Consider every channel
as if it were a home: the owner of that home has the right to share it with
others or not and it is he who decides whom to let in and whom to exclude. In
your home you decide, you are free to create your channel and establish your
own rules
